Hats Off to a New Year!

Fourth Graders at Cantiague Elementary have been busy learning and having fun! From a special author visit, to playing volleyball in gym, we have been experiencing many new things.

Wind speeds up evaporation!

Learning about weather in the Science Lab

Author Visit
By: Ethan and Anjali, Louisa and Jack

On 12/14/12, at 1:00, Nancy Krulik came to the Cantiague library to meet Mrs. Moses' class. She wanted to meet the 4th graders and she  even helped us revise our stories in a much more interesting way. It was amazing how we added voice to our writing! Then we did readers theaters. We dressed up as the characters from her book that she read to us (Katie Kazoo)  and we did a play. It was fantastic!  We hope Nancy Krulik will come back and visit Cantiague again.

Weather
By Danny, Austin, Naima, Gabe and Emma

In the science lab, we learned about weather. We go to the science lab every Thursday at 9:25. Mrs. Oddo teaches us there. Most of the time Mrs. Moses teaches us science in class. We learned about the types clouds. In the science room we did an experiment and it was about steam and how water turns into a gas. This is called evaporation. We love the experiments we do with Mrs.Oddo! There are many different types of weather like rain, sleet, snow, hail and storms. We can learn more by going on the internet, watching the weather forecast and listening t0 the radio. There are other ways like reading a newspaper or reading a book too. It's really important to learn about weather because it can help you get ready for a storm. This is what we learned in science and it's really fun!

Native Americans
By Harry and Carly

In social studies we learned about the Algonquins and the Iroquois. The Algonquins and Iroquois are tribes of native americans. They migrated here along time ago, even before Christopher Columbus came here! Both tribes were from the eastern woodlands. Also, they had to make their own homes out of their enviroment. The Algonquins made wigwams. They were made of bark and sapplings. The Iroquois lived in a Longhouse. A Longhouse fit an entire clan, which is an extended family. They made it out of  sapplings and bark. They both used animals for shelter, meat, clothes, tools and weapons. They had to use the resources around them for everything they did. They did not have stores like we have today.

Heat speeds up evaporation.

Math Jeopardy is a fun way to practice division!

Math Crazy
 By Drew and Kathryn

The whole class is learning math. Mr. P, Mrs. Moses and Mrs. Park-Wong are helping us. We are learning multiplication and division. In division we are starting long division. In multiplication we are multiplying bigger numbers. We started division in the middle of December. We started multiplication in the beginning of November. " I like division," said Drew. We are learning this in school. We are also doing math sheets as homework for practice. Mrs.Moses has also told us some math websites to visit so we can learn more. We are doing this to help us get better at math. "I like division with remainders," said Kathryn. First we started with easy problems and we inched our way to big problems with many steps. We like division and multiplication!

Volleyball Mania!
By Lindsey, Vivian, Hunter and Dylan

The fourth grade has been playing volleyball in gym during December. Mr. Bailin and Mr. Chaney teach us skills in volleyball. The classes are Mrs. Moses' Class, Ms. Huzarsky's Class and The Levermans. We've been playing because we want to learn how to play volleyball and to have fun. To play, you serve the ball and hit it over the net. Some of the different hits are called bump, set and spike. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. the teams are the South Africa Strikers, Hungary Hippos, Lithuania Lightning, Brazil Bulldogs, Portugal Peacocks, and the Ireland Platupus. The two teams that made it to the finals are the South Africa Stikers and the Ireland Platupus. the Ireland Platupus won the finals."Hoorray for Ireland!" yelled the fourth grade.

Feature Articles
By Alvin, Matthias and Ashley

The Fourth graders at Cantiague Elementary  have been working hard on writing their own feature articles. We picked a topic that interested us and then did research and wrote facts in our notebooks. We asked questions and tried to answer to them. During writer's workshop we drafted our information into paragraphs. We revised our writing and tried to use voice and a quote. We used, "Publisher" in the computer lab to type up our final draft. Now we will share with eachother and celebrate our hard work with special treats!

Kicking Off the New Year:

In January we published our feature articles. We are learning about Explorers of the New World in social studies. In math, we've started some fraction action! For read aloud, it's Matilda, by Roald Dahl. We will also be reading poetry for our new genre study.

We hope you enjoyed our BLOG. Remember to send us a comment; we'd love to hear from you!

October Happenings

Fourth grade is off to a great start! The children would like to share some of the highlights of fourth grade so far.

Our class is reading the book, The Kid Who Ran For President.
Mrs. Moses always reads the book after recess. She calls us to the rug and we sit next to our reading partners. Mrs. Moses tells us to make connections, vizualize, and listen carefully to eachother. She is always using expression when she reads, and that helps us to understand! This book is about a boy named Judson Moon and he is running for president. He's in 7th grade and his friend Lane convinced him to run for president! In the book they made the 26th ammendment, which would allow kids to run for office, and Judson got enough signatures to become a candidate in the state of Wisconsin. We will see if he wins!

In Science we're studying Geology. We learned about erosion and weathering with Mrs. Moses and Mrs. Oddo. We have science in the lab every Thursday at 9:25. Our latest experiment was erosion sand tables. First, we put sand in a tray on the table. Next, we poured water on the sand. Then, we pulled the cap off and drained the water. Later, we saw how much the position of the sand changed. This is called deposition. As you can see, we have so much fun at science!!

We have Peace Talks in Fourth Grade. We have Peace Talk on Friday at the end of the day. We do Dove awards, Bucketfiller awards, Teamwork awards, and golden tickets. We do Peace Talk on the carpet or sometimes in an air conditioned room. We have Peace Talk because we want to be kind to each other. In Peace Talk we have a word of the week. Some words we've talked about are: patience, friendship, respect and compassion. The kids nominate people that were kind to them and helped them for awards. If your golden ticket gets picked from the jar, you can get a prize from the prize bin, read to another class, have lunch with the teacher or earn a homework pass! We love Peace Talks!

In 4th grade we are writing stories that happened to us. They are called personal narratives. Jack's story is called, What's That Splash? Julia's is called, Glow Stick Time, Drew's story is called, Porgy's Little Suprise and Kathryn's is called, Always in My Heart. We did this project during October and September for Writer's Workshop. We used our Writer's Notebooks in room 18 and the computer lab. We did this so we could get better at writing and show our parents and friends. First, we made entries in our writer's notebook. Then, we wrote a draft on paper. Next, we revised our story. Next we edited our story. Then, we made a neat draft. After, we started typing. Finally we made a dedication and an "All About the Author" page. Finally, we published. We got to share our wonderful stories with teachers, parents and friends! Hooray!

In Social Studies we've been learning about New York. In our classroom and computer room we did a lot of research on New York. We researched the state animal, flower, beverages, and many other things. Then we made an awesome Power Point presentation about NY.  Also, we made New York cookies and labeled the important land forms and bodies of water. We put M&Ms on the important cities and blue frosting  on the rivers. We also put a swedish fish on Long Island. We even put a Hershey Kiss on Albany, our captial state. We did all these activities because we wanted to learn cool facts about our state. Social Studies is so much FUN!
