Perfect PARP Week!
By Austin, Drew, Lindsey and Danny

It happened on Friday, March 8th, 2013 from 8:45-9:15 a.m. What happened? PARP Week happened! PARP Week encourages kids to read more books. Students' parents came in to our classroom to read with their children. Parents came into Room 18, which is Mrs. Moses' classroom  at Cantiague school. While the students read to their parents, Mrs. Moses came around and took pictures of the students and their parents. After we finished reading, we discussed what our book was about using a think mark. Perfect PARP Week was so much fun!

Stamina?

By Anjali, Emma, Julia and Ashley

What is Stamina? To us, stamina means to have confidence in ourselves. Also, to us, it means to never give up, and to keep picking yourself up even if you fall down. In April, we watched the music video and read the lyrics to, "Hall of Fame." Click on the link above and you will see it for yourself. We did this because we wanted to get ready for the ELA test by building our stamina. Mrs. Moses went on Youtube and showed us the song, "Hall Of Fame," by Will.i.am and The Script. We saw the video in our classroom on the smartboard/computer. We now know what stamina is and we will think about it everytime we are stuck on something! Never give up on your dreams and you will succeed!

Poetry is Exciting!

By Kathryn and Naima

Our class did a unit on poetry for Writer's Workshop!!!
First, class looked on cool websites such as gigglepoetry.com and poetryforkids.com to see great poems. Then we each made a cool poster with a poem on it and we shared with the class!! Next, we  read lots of poetry books and noticed what poetic devices writers use like: personification, similie, metaphor and alliteration. Finally, we created our own poems. We made poetry books of our very own. Come check them out in the hallway! Two of our favorite authors are Shelsilverstein.com. and Kenn Nesbitt. Read some poetry for yourself!

The Baby is Coming!

By Louisa, Jack, Harry and Vivian

It's a boy! Our teacher, Mrs. Park-Wong is having a baby boy. We had a suprise baby shower for her. We  also gave her gifts and made a class project titled, "21 Ways to be the Best Mommy Ever." Everyone gave her one tip for being a good mom. When the day was finally here (aka Friday, April 5th) ,we stuffed all the presents under Mrs. Moses's desk and hid in the room. Mrs. Park-Wong was jumping with joy when she walked in. When she saw all the baby presents she said, "Thank you!" to everyone. Finally, we had cake and fruits that Danny's mom brought in. IT WAS THE BEST BABY SHOWER EVER!

Animals on the Go !!!
By Hunter, Ethan, Dylan and Carly

Do you know a lot about animals?   Last month we started learning about animals in science lab with Mrs.Oddo and Mrs.Moses.  We are learning about animals and their behaviors. We learned about mammals, amphibians, birds, fish, reptiles and insects. One experiment we did was with mealworm larva.  We tried to see what area they would prefer. One experiment was to see if they would rather go to the dark, the light, sand or soil. Most of the mealworms went to the soil. The second experiment was to see if they preferred apples, organges, bran or oatmeal. Most of the worms chose oatmeal. Then we compared invertebrates and vertebrates. Vertebrates are animals with backbones and invertabrates are animals with no back bones. Next, we will be creating a diorama with animals in their habitats!

Math Shapes
By Matthias and Alvin Lee

Do you know about geometry? This is what we know.  Mr.P, Mrs.Moses, Mrs.Park-Wong and our classmates  all  help eachother in math.  We started geometry in March and ended  in April. We learned about angles, lines and shapes in class and at home. We were doing math so that we will practice more and  we will get smarter at math and bring more knowlege to our brains. We were using protractors and rulers so we can measure angles, shapes and lines. We also learned how to measure area and perimeter. Do you know the difference between area and perimeter?  The difference is that for area you do length times width. But for perimeter you add up the lengths of all  the sides and the sum is the answer! That is the diffrence between area and perimeter. We hope you learned a lot about geometry!

Hats Off to a New Year!

Fourth Graders at Cantiague Elementary have been busy learning and having fun! From a special author visit, to playing volleyball in gym, we have been experiencing many new things.

Wind speeds up evaporation!

Learning about weather in the Science Lab

Author Visit
By: Ethan and Anjali, Louisa and Jack

On 12/14/12, at 1:00, Nancy Krulik came to the Cantiague library to meet Mrs. Moses' class. She wanted to meet the 4th graders and she  even helped us revise our stories in a much more interesting way. It was amazing how we added voice to our writing! Then we did readers theaters. We dressed up as the characters from her book that she read to us (Katie Kazoo)  and we did a play. It was fantastic!  We hope Nancy Krulik will come back and visit Cantiague again.

Weather
By Danny, Austin, Naima, Gabe and Emma

In the science lab, we learned about weather. We go to the science lab every Thursday at 9:25. Mrs. Oddo teaches us there. Most of the time Mrs. Moses teaches us science in class. We learned about the types clouds. In the science room we did an experiment and it was about steam and how water turns into a gas. This is called evaporation. We love the experiments we do with Mrs.Oddo! There are many different types of weather like rain, sleet, snow, hail and storms. We can learn more by going on the internet, watching the weather forecast and listening t0 the radio. There are other ways like reading a newspaper or reading a book too. It's really important to learn about weather because it can help you get ready for a storm. This is what we learned in science and it's really fun!

Native Americans
By Harry and Carly

In social studies we learned about the Algonquins and the Iroquois. The Algonquins and Iroquois are tribes of native americans. They migrated here along time ago, even before Christopher Columbus came here! Both tribes were from the eastern woodlands. Also, they had to make their own homes out of their enviroment. The Algonquins made wigwams. They were made of bark and sapplings. The Iroquois lived in a Longhouse. A Longhouse fit an entire clan, which is an extended family. They made it out of  sapplings and bark. They both used animals for shelter, meat, clothes, tools and weapons. They had to use the resources around them for everything they did. They did not have stores like we have today.

Heat speeds up evaporation.

Math Jeopardy is a fun way to practice division!

Math Crazy
 By Drew and Kathryn

The whole class is learning math. Mr. P, Mrs. Moses and Mrs. Park-Wong are helping us. We are learning multiplication and division. In division we are starting long division. In multiplication we are multiplying bigger numbers. We started division in the middle of December. We started multiplication in the beginning of November. " I like division," said Drew. We are learning this in school. We are also doing math sheets as homework for practice. Mrs.Moses has also told us some math websites to visit so we can learn more. We are doing this to help us get better at math. "I like division with remainders," said Kathryn. First we started with easy problems and we inched our way to big problems with many steps. We like division and multiplication!

Volleyball Mania!
By Lindsey, Vivian, Hunter and Dylan

The fourth grade has been playing volleyball in gym during December. Mr. Bailin and Mr. Chaney teach us skills in volleyball. The classes are Mrs. Moses' Class, Ms. Huzarsky's Class and The Levermans. We've been playing because we want to learn how to play volleyball and to have fun. To play, you serve the ball and hit it over the net. Some of the different hits are called bump, set and spike. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. the teams are the South Africa Strikers, Hungary Hippos, Lithuania Lightning, Brazil Bulldogs, Portugal Peacocks, and the Ireland Platupus. The two teams that made it to the finals are the South Africa Stikers and the Ireland Platupus. the Ireland Platupus won the finals."Hoorray for Ireland!" yelled the fourth grade.

Feature Articles
By Alvin, Matthias and Ashley

The Fourth graders at Cantiague Elementary  have been working hard on writing their own feature articles. We picked a topic that interested us and then did research and wrote facts in our notebooks. We asked questions and tried to answer to them. During writer's workshop we drafted our information into paragraphs. We revised our writing and tried to use voice and a quote. We used, "Publisher" in the computer lab to type up our final draft. Now we will share with eachother and celebrate our hard work with special treats!

Kicking Off the New Year:

In January we published our feature articles. We are learning about Explorers of the New World in social studies. In math, we've started some fraction action! For read aloud, it's Matilda, by Roald Dahl. We will also be reading poetry for our new genre study.

We hope you enjoyed our BLOG. Remember to send us a comment; we'd love to hear from you!
